12. Personal Resume of Dr. Wilson Y.S. Zhou

Dr. Wilson ZHOU graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai, P R China, and attained Bachelor degree and Master degree of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1982 and 1985 respectively. From 1985 to 1990, he worked in the Applied Mechanics Department at Fudan University as a teacher and subsequently promoted to a lecturer in 1987. During this period, he lectured and tutored several courses on Fluid dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Calculus and Partial Differential Equations etc. He had also carried out research in the field of Biofluid Dynamics.

In 1990, he left Fudan University to study for a PhD at the Centre for Building Studies, Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He obtained fellowship awards from the Concordia University in two successive years of 1992 and 1993. He carried out Computer Simulation as well as Wind Tunnel tests to study the wind effects on buildings. He was awarded the PhD in 1995 for his success in the research.

Dr. Wilson ZHOU became involved in the curtain wall industry in 1995 when he joined a curtain wall manufacturer. His responsibilities include: structural calculations of curtain wall systems and management of curtain wall projects.

Dr. Wilson ZHOU joined a leading curtain wall testing company in Hong Kong in early 1997 where he had the opportunity to see a lot of different curtain wall designs from the testing mock-ups which were built for performance tests based on their typical designs. The failures of the curtain wall systems during the tests whenever happens were analyzed, and remedial works were witnessed and recorded in testing reports.

In his role as a senior engineer and a general manager of this testing company, Dr. Wilson ZHOU helped the company to expand the testing business to various tests other than the curtain wall mock-up tests. He had also helped the company to expand the business into some new fields such as curtain wall consultancy, structural calculation and engineering design of curtain walls. He had carried out or instructed other engineers to carry out structural calculations, engineering design and OTTV calculations for curtain wall, window wall, glass wall and granite cladding systems etc.

In January 2002, Dr. Wilson ZHOU established his own company – WILSON CURTAIN WALL CONSULTANT (HK) LIMITED.

During his 25 years in the industry, Dr. ZHOU has conducted performance tests for more than 1600 mockups for versions projects of different building cladding systems. Tests were conducted to various international standards including ASTM, BS, AS/NZS and PR China’s GB/T.

Dr. Wilson ZHOU has inspected cladding failures on various buildings and provided remedial proposals. He has also helped cladding contractors to determine the wind pressures on buildings of different shapes and at different locations by using wind tunnel tests and/or the Hong Kong wind code.

As a consultant for the Clients, Architects, Main (General) Contractors and Curtain Wall Subcontractors, Dr. Wilson ZHOU has checked, commented and approved as Independent Design Checker (IDC) the designs for curtain walls for more than 30 projects in Hong Kong.

In the summers of 2001 and 2003 and in autumn 2009, Dr. Wilson ZHOU organized and gave lectures for a course on the design of curtain walls, glass walls, skylights, window walls, windows and stone claddings etc. More than 140 professionals in the building façade industry or academic attended the course. Course notes were prepared and distributed during the classes. Dr. ZHOU has also written and published two books on curtain wall design based on these course notes in 2002 and 2018 respectively.

As an engineer educated in Canada and China, Dr. Wilson ZHOU can understand both the western and the Chinese styles of doing business in both Hong Kong and Mainland China.
